DETACHMENT-Consolidated Report Forms-We should be receiving this year's version of the consolidated report form. They will be mailed to each Squadron from Department. Please wait until April to fill out so you will have a list of all donations for the previous year. All Squadrons and Districts are encouraged to fill out the forms and return them to Adjutant Wes Wills. This is how you can show off what your Squadron does each year. MEMBERSHIP 2011-2012-The membership year is still going strong. All Squadrons need work the remainder of their memberships so the Detachment can reach it's 100% membership goal by May 9th . We are fast approaching our 34th consecutive all time high in membership. As of Feb 3, we were sitting at 86.84% we still need 802 members to reach our goal. We have lost three Squadrons this year due to them not turning in any membership: Wakeeney, Clay Center, St. George. District Conventions -District convention dates and locations: District 1-April 13-15-Leavenworth #23, District 2-March 31-Overland Park, District 3-March 30-April 1-Chanute, District 4-April 28-Manhattan, District 5-April 27-29-Wellington, District 6-April 21-Norton, District 7-April 28-Hutchinson, District 8-April 20-22-Garden City. American Legion Family State Convention-The Kansas American Legion Family State Convention is scheduled for May 18-20, 2012 in Great Bend. More information will be sent out soon. National Convention-Indianapolis-The housing information for this year's National Convention is on the Legion web site. The Kansas Legion Family is slated to stay at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. If you are planning on attending you need to fill out the request form once3 Department sends it out and return it to Department Headquarters by July 18. All elected S.A.L. Delegates and Alternates, delegate fees are paid by the Detachment. If you wish to attend the Kansas Party you will need to pay the required fee.. Any Guests will need to pay the $15.00 registration fee to attend any of the sessions or visit emblem sales. Deadline for Detachment Scholarship Applications-Feb. 16, 2012Spring N.E.C. & N.M.I.-Indianapolis-May 5-6 2012 100% Membership Target Date-May 9, 2012 Veterans Assistance Day-May 19, 2012 National Convention-Indianapolis-Aug. 24-26, 2012 Fall N.E.C. & Detachment Commanders Conference-Oct. 13-14, 2012 Mid-Winter Forum-The S.A.L. Mid-Winter Forum was held in Leavenworth on Feb.3. There were 19 attendees including National Commander Candidate Chris Huntzinger-Pennsylvania, and Midwest National Vice Commander Danny Smith-Nebraska. Illness and road conditions kept the expected attendees lower than expected. Thanks to all of those that were able to attend. Announcements-The following S.A.L. members have indicated that they intend to run for Detachment Offices in May. Sam-Sparks-Commander, Doug Evans-Vice Commander, Wes Wills-Adjutant, Robert Whitaker & Russ Circle-Master-at-Arms. Commander Ward has made the Child Welfare Foundation as his Commander's project this year. He has set a goal for the Detachment to donate at least $2 per member. As of the 4th of Feb. we are at $1.62 per member so we have a ways to go. Win A Belt Buckle-The Detachment of Kansas S.A.L. is giving away 8 Legion Family Belt Buckles. $1 donation is requested but not required in order to win a buckle. Tickets are available from the Detachment Officers. The drawings will be at this year's State Convention in Great Bend. All proceeds to benefit the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation. 2011-2012 Individual Recruitment Award - Any member from any Squadron can earn a Recruitment pin. All you have to do is recruit 5 New Members into the S.A.L., no renewals. Then fill out the form and send it to the Midwest Membership chairman. The forms are available online or get a hold of the Detachment Adjutant and He will send you a form. All forms must be postmarked prior to midnight Aug. 31, 2012. Life Membership-The Sons of the American Legion-Detachment of Kansas offers a Life membership plan. The plan is available for any Kansas S.A.L. member. Check out the rate table available on the Detachment web site, pay the required fee and become a life member of the Kansas S.A.L. The Life membership is not transferable to other Detachments. The life membership plan has been available since the 2002 membership year and we currently have around 15 life members. Committee & Commission-If you or someone in your Squadron is interested in becoming involved at the Detachment level, we are always looking for members to be on our committees and commissions. Contact any of the Detachment officers and they will pass on the information to the incoming Commander that will make the appointments. Detachment Web Site - The Detachment of Kansas web site went live in Feb of 2009. Since that time we have had over 300,000 hits. The site is updated on a regular basis, and the membership report is updated weekly throughout the membership push. There are lots of information, links, pictures, forms, and upcoming events available on the site. Check it out, make suggestions for improvement. The site address is kssal.org.
Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Kansas Kansas S.A.L. Life Membership Plan 1) This plan shall become available commencing with the 2002 membership year, beginning July 1, 2001. The Detachment Finance Committee shall be authorized to change the Kansas SAL Life Membership Plan subject to the approval of the Department Executive Committee. 2) The entire amount of the Kansas SAL Life Membership must accompany this application to Detachment Headquarters. (If current dues have been paid, a credit memo will be issued to the Member’s Squadron). There will be no refunds to any individual or heirs of any members who participates in the Kansas Life Membership Plan. The fee charged for participation in the Kansas Life Membership Plan will be based on the Squadrons annual ADULT dues.* 3) Any increase in Squadron, Detachment, or National dues must be absorbed or paid by the member or Squadron at the discretion of the Detachment Executive Committee and approval of the American Legion Department Executive Committee. 4) An engraved metal Kansas SAL Life Membership card can be obtained from Detachment Headquarters for $16.00 or current cost. Replacement cards are available from Detachment at cost. Squadrons are to issue Kansas SAL Life Member participants an annual membership card each year. 5) A Kansas SAL Life Member may transfer to another Squadron in Kansas with the approval of their Squadron and the acceptance of the Squadron they wish to transfer to. Kansas SAL Life Members wishing to transfer to a Squadron outside of Kansas will be issued a Pro-Rated refund check made payable to the member and the Squadron they wish to transfer to from the Detachment of Kansas. 6) The Kansas SAL Life Membership rate table is on the reverse of this application. The fee charged for participation in the Kansas Life Membership Plan will be based on the Squadrons annual ADULT dues.* * Dual Members who participate in the Kansas SAL Life Membership Plan will be charged a fee based on their Squadrons dual member rate, and must maintain and on request show evidence of their current membership in the American Legion.

NAME & ADDRESS CORRECTIONS, – We receive many, many requests for name corrections and changing of mailing addresses throughout the year. Often, we receive mail and telephone inquiries informing us of frustrations in trying to get these changes made. There are many ways to correct this data. First, each Squadron should obtain these changes and send in a member data form. Seems simple, but many frustrations continue to plague our membership. Other ways to make changes is through the SAL web page at www.sal.legion.org under contact us. Also, the American Legion web site contains similar information and contact information. Members can email us at “sal@legion.org” and through the web page above. We can even take information on questions, name changes, and address changes by writing to us at The American Legion, PO Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Please include this information as well as the Sons National Web site www.sal.legion.org in all your Detachment newsletters and bulletins.
