A message from  Detachment Commander for 2017-2018

Detachment Commander Michael Saindon

Greetings Team Kansas,

As we march towards the end of the year, we don’t have too much time left of the 2017 membership year. We still have time to make our 39th consecutive year of growth in the Sons of The American Legion of Kansas. No other Detachment even comes close to having 39 years of continuous growth. That's due to you, all of the recruiting and obtaining those renewals. We are still 85 short of making this happen. In order for us to accomplish our growth goal, it's going to take every one of us knocking on doors, making phone calls and asking these members to renew. We are running out of time. I am sure, with reaching out and making that personal contact, we can make our 100% by the end of the year. With the team we have, I know we CAN do this!

We are off to a good start for 2018 membership but we are behind where we were at this time last year. We still have too many Squadrons with “goose eggs”. That means we have Squadrons that are carrying the weight of those that have not sent a transmittal in. Take the first step to get a transmittal in as soon as you can so those “goose eggs” can become important membership numbers for your Squadron.

During the first week in October, I traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the Sons of The American Legion Fall NEC and attended the Commander training class. There was a lot of good information that was put out about the American Legion family. They talked about the new training class called Basic Training that is available on the American Legion website. It is free to all American Legion Family members. There's a wealth of information about the history of The American Legion. I encourage each and every one of you to try to find the time to take this class. It’s well worth the time.

October 14, 2017, I attended the Eisenhower Pilgrimage held in Abilene, Kansas. I had the honor of laying the National Sons of The American Legion Wreath on the Eisenhower Memorial. Assisting me in laying the Wreath were my Detachment Co-Historians, Michael and William King. Following the Eisenhower pilgrimage was the Homecoming for Vice Commander Dan Wiley, Vice President Karen Hastings and Vice Commander Terry Harris that took place at the Greyhound Hall of Fame Museum in Abilene, Kansas. November will be another very busy month with several events going on. Many of the VA hospitals will be having their Christmas gift shops for the Veterans. This is a wonderful opportunity for the S.A.L. to participate and support our veterans through the American Legion Auxiliary gift shops. Contact your local American Legion Auxiliary to see what you can do to help. The Big Red One Turkey Run will be November 18th at Fort Riley. The purpose and mission of the Turkey Run is to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner that our wounded warriors and their families can prepare and enjoy together. All Legion Family members are welcome to attend, participate and help with this event. Those interested in helping with the Turkey Run must get your name on the clearance list so you can get on Post.

Remember! There's always one more thing that we can do to support our Veterans, Their Families, Children and Youth and the Community.

Hurricane Harvey: How to support veterans in need

The American Legion’s National Emergency Fund provides direct financial assistance to Legion Family members and posts impacted by natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

A full 100 percent of donations to the National Emergency Fund are turned into grants for individuals, families, and posts impacted by natural disasters. Donations are tax-deductible, and are not used to cover administrative or promotional costs.

Please act now to support veterans and their families impacted by Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent flooding in Texas and other gulf cost regions.

Important Notice

To all Detachment of Kansas Squadrons:

The By Laws of the Detachment of Kansas have been changed:

The Squadrons of Kansas are no longer required to return their unused membership cards in order to receive their new membership cards. The new cards will be mailed out when they are received from National Headquarters.   This year they will be starting to mail them out from Topeka on Monday June 13, 2016. It is suggested that each Squadron have some established way of accounting for their membership cards but it is not a requirement.

The SALute is being distributed strictly electronicly, and its very possible that this will be the way it is distributed in the future. If you want your Squadron to receive a copy please send us a working e-mail for your squadron. This SALute was put together by  Don Culver, tell us what you think. We will consider all suggestions. E-mail your Squadrons e-mail address or your coments to us, our e-mails are listed in the August SALute.
