As one of the four pillars upon which The American Legion was founded, the Sons of The American Legion consider volunteering on behalf of the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation program a primary responsibility. The Detachment of Kansas actively supports the many programs and opportunities created to compensate and care for generations of U.S. veterans and their dependents. The overall VA&R program provides the ability for the Legion Family members to offer direct assistance to veterans and their families in a variety of ways, including help and support to families of deployed service men and women, volunteering at the VA Medical hospital facilities in Kansas or simply offering encouragement and financial support to those in need of assistance.
The VA&R program encompasses many areas of involvement in support of the core components as outlined by the National Organization. These include, but are not limited to, assisting local communities with the "Heroes to Hometown" program, working on behalf of homeless veterans and local shelters, helping with the "Creative Arts Festival" and providing needed donations and volunteer hours to the "Fisher House" program, a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need.
